At 3pm Eastern Time, the Mars InSight probe will begin its 7-minute landing process towards the surface of Mars. NASA’s Mission Control will be monitoring the landing, but the process itself is fully automated, as it takes longer than 7 minutes for a signal to make the round-trip journey to the Red Planet.

InSight (an acronym for “Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport”) has a vastly different mission than the last spacecraft NASA sent to Mars, the Curiosity rover. It’s a stationary probe, and its mission is to explore the Martian interior. The instruments on board are equipped to study different aspects of the planet, from its tectonic activity to the heat flow coming from its interior to the processes by which the planet formed in the first place.

This mission isn’t solely a NASA project. One of the primary instruments on board, the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, was created by a consortium of organizations led by the French national space agency, CNES. Its second primary instrument, the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Probe, which will dig 10 – 16 feet deep into Mars, was provided by the German Aerospace Center.

Tagging along with the InSight rover are two small satellites, collectively called Mars Cube One. These satellites, which are each bout the size of a briefcase, are digital relay satellites that NASA hopes will demonstrate new communications capabilities. If successful, the satellites will be able to capture information from the InSight landing and quickly relay it back to Earth.

You can watch NASA’s livestream of the landing below. The agency’s broadcast will start at 2pm EST. The landing itself is scheduled for 3pm EST. If you’re feeling like you want to watch the landing with a large group of people, there are a number of landing events planned all over the U.S. and Europe, including a broadcast from Times Square.

At 3pm Eastern Time, the Mars InSight probe will start its 7-minute landing procedure towards the surface area of Mars. NASA’s Objective Control will be keeping track of the landing, however the procedure itself is completely automated, as it takes longer than 7 minutes for a signal to make the round-trip journey to the Red World.

InSight (an acronym for “Interior Expedition utilizing Seismic Examinations, Geodesy and Heat Transportation”) has a greatly various objective than the last spacecraft NASA sent out to Mars, the Interest rover. It’s a fixed probe, and its objective is to check out the Martian interior. The instruments on board are geared up to study various elements of the world, from its tectonic activity to the heat circulation originating from its interior to the procedures by which the world formed in the very first location.

This objective isn’t exclusively a NASA task. Among the main instruments on board, the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, was developed by a consortium of companies led by the French nationwide area company, CNES. Its 2nd main instrument, the Heat Circulation and Physical Residences Probe, which will dig 10 – 16 feet deep into Mars, was offered by the German Aerospace Center.

Accompanying with the InSight rover are 2 little satellites, jointly called Mars Cube One These satellites, which are each bout the size of a brief-case, are digital relay satellites that NASA hopes will show brand-new interactions abilities. If effective, the satellites will have the ability to catch details from the InSight landing and rapidly communicated it back to Earth.

You can view NASA’s livestream of the landing listed below. The company’s broadcast will begin at 2pm EST. The landing itself is set up for 3pm EST. If you’re seeming like you wish to view the landing with a big group of individuals, there are a variety of landing occasions prepared all over the U.S. and Europe, consisting of a broadcast from Times Square.
