Expandable storage isn’t as common these days as it used to be. But even as many device manufacturers have turned to fixed storage limits, there are plenty of applications for these tiny data cards. Prices can be a bit high on average, but that’s why taking advantage of deals during something like October Prime Day is so great. If you’re looking for a new microSD card, now’s a good time to buy one.

There’s a number of use cases for microSD cards, even in 2024. Believe it or not, there are still Android phones that support these cards, so you can expand your storage without, you know, buying a whole new phone. Other devices, like cameras and drones also support these cards. If you pick up an adapter, you can use your microSD card on devices that support full size SD cards, like desktops and laptops.

However, where I find microSD cards most useful, particularly microSDXC, is with handheld game consoles, like a Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. The Switch in particular only comes with 32GB of internal storage, which gets eaten up fast if you choose to buy your games digitally. Tears of the Kingdom is 16.3GB alone, which doesn’t leave you much room for other large titles, like Super Smash Bros. or Doom. As someone who likes the convenience of digital downloads, one of the first things I did when I bought my Switch way back in 2017 was pick up a microSD card, and I’ve never looked back.

You can simplify your gaming life a lot by picking up a microSDXC card with a considerable amount of storage. These things vary in size and price, but there’s no shortage of options on sale for Prime Day. You can spend as little as $14.99 right now on a 128GB card, immediately multiplying your internal storage. However, if you have some more cash to burn, and you want to delay your storage woes even further, you can go up to 512GB for $31.34, or 1TB for $78.69, or even 1.5TB for $89.29. (That last one is 40% off, down from $149.99.) You can even pick up a Zelda-themed 1TB microSDXC card for your Switch, but it is $6.30 more than the standard 1TB card, and you’ll never see it, as it’ll live in your Switch. Still, it does look cool.
