A benefit of this chemical recycling, as it’s called, is that there is no degradation. “This circular approach is analogous to the water cycle, where water freezes and melts on an infinite basis with no loss in properties.”

AmSty calls the recycling process PolyUsable, in contrast to the traditional take, make, waste linear model of production and disposal, the CEO says, adding that the PolyUsable process has a 50-70% lower carbon footprint compared to virgin polystyrene manufacturing.

Regenyx already has a facility that can process up to 10 tons per day of various polystyrene waste, effectively keeping that much plastic out of landfills. A regional facility is in the works, and aims to churn out five times as much per day.

Collecting and sorting

Brad Crocker, president and CEO of AmSty, said in a statement that the Regenyx venture is “committed to a future where discarded polystyrene materials are no longer sent to landfills. This approach also holds great promise for other types of plastics as well.”

The problem is, the current infrastructure for recycling polystyrene materials is limited in North America. Vaillancourt says Regenyx is working with many companies throughout North America to improve infrastructure so more polystyrene waste can be collected, sorted and recycled. For now, communities like Sherwood, Oregon, are encouraging residents to drop off polystyrene items at a local recycling center.

“Polystyrene is completely misunderstood,” Vaillancourt says. “It is the highest utility polymer ever created and the most compatible with today’s chemical recycling process.”
