• Newt Gingrich recently warned Republicans to stop “underestimating” President Joe Biden.
  • The ex-GOP House speaker blasted Biden’s policies but said Democrats had been able to pass “radical” bills.
  • Gingrich said conservative “hostility” to Biden has prevented Republicans from fully judging his record.

Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned that the Republican Party should stop “underestimating” President Joe Biden, who has been able to score major legislative during his first two years in office wins despite Democrats holding narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress.

Gingrich said on Wednesday that GOP opposition to Biden has caused the party to minimize the success of the president and his party.

“We dislike Biden so much, we pettily focus on his speaking difficulties … and other personal flaws,” he wrote on his website.

Gingrich represented a slice of suburban Atlanta in the US House of Representatives from 1979 to 1999 and was its speaker from 1995 to 1999.

“Like virtually all conservatives and Republicans, I deeply oppose his policies,” he continued to say. “They are clearly weakening America and strengthening our enemies. And, again, like most Americans, I oppose the woke policies which are undermining and threatening to destroy popular, unique, shared American culture. However, conservatives’ hostility to the Biden administration on our terms tends to blind us to just how effective Biden has been on his terms.”

Gingrich’s comments come after Democrats massively outperformed most political expectations in the midterms, with the party retaining their Senate majority and significantly curtailing losses in the House.

Under Gingrich’s watch in the 1994 midterms, the GOP took back the House after 40 years in the minority — while the party also recaptured a Senate majority for the first time since they had relinquished control in 1987 — in what is widely known as the “Republican Revolution.”
