I hope you like Moon Knight and nature documentaries, because otherwise, there’s not a lot new to celebrate on Disney+ in April. The aforementioned Oscar Isaac-starring Marvel series, which premieres March 30, will continue to spool out new episodes throughout the month, and it’s a good thing the streamer opted for the “one episode a week” strategy because they’ve got basically nothing else going on.
As for those documentaries, well, April 22 is Earth Day, which Disney has long used to leverage its ownership of National Geographic. This year, Disney+ will premiere four new specials to celebrate/greenwash its corporate image, including Disneynature’s Polar Bear, which, like earlier films Penguins and Bears, edits documentary footage into something resembling a narrative that’s stitched together with celebrity voiceover—from Catherine Keener, in this case.
For the kids who love High School Musical: The Series, Disney+ will also premiere an original film, Better Nate Than Ever, based on the novel by Tim Federle, about a 13-year-old musicals-obsessed boy who dreams of Broadway stardom even though he can’t get cast in a middle-school production. His failure at home aside, due nevertheless runs away from home with a friend to try out for a show on the Great White Way (in the book, the show was E.T.: The Musical; Disney has unsurprisingly changed this to Lilo and Stitch, which is more corporately synergistic but less funny).
